Big Garden Birdwatch
Last week, i took part in the Big Garden Birdwatch run by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). During the day, we sat to watch and record all the birds we saw in our garden. We recorded starlings, sparrows, blackbirds, pigeons and a robin. We were surprised how many birds there were when we were just looking
out at them.
We put a tray out on the grass with some food on it to encourage more birds to come in. The bigger birds scared off the smaller birds.
Now, I would like to go somewhere to see some different birds. I have a book to identify the different species. Bird watching is cool.

Chinese New Year

Kevin, Wuxi, China
In China, people celebrate the Chinese New Year. Chinese people celebrate by letting off fireworks, giving red envelopes with money in, sticking Spring Festival Couplets on their doors, wearing red clothes, and putting lanterns on their ceilings. Also during the Chinese New Year, we eat dumplings and fish.
There are many stories about Chinese New Year, like Year’s story. It's about a monster called Year; he is made by loneliness. When it‘s Chinese New Year, he finds some lonely children and goes into their heart, and makes them so sad, lonely and angry that they will be crazy. So after every New Year people will have fireworks, wear red clothes because Year was
afraid of sound and was scared of red. The Chinese New Year is my second favorite holiday; my best
holiday is Christmas holiday.
Could you write a news story for our newspaper? The best articles tell a story of something that actually happened and perhaps give your views about it. Obviously a picture helps tell the story too!
The effects of the snow
John, Sandy
Yesterday, my brother Philip fell off his bike and now his arm has to be in a sling. He was cycling up our road when his bike hit a pot hole in the road and it knocked him off.
I have noticed that there are a lot of pot holes in our road since the snow
disappeared. I don't know why this is but I think it is dangerous and these holes should be filled in as soon as possible.
Philip has sprained his arm but he should be back on his bike in about a week.
Ratachewy

Lia, Emma and Ross, Perth

In the UK, we have a TV programme in which celebrities have to survive in the Australian bush. Now, two of the celebrities are facing animal cruelty charges because they captured, killed and ate vermin rat.
It is rumoured that the rats in the programme were domestic rats and apparently the producers added them for just for entertainment, not for eating. The celebrities didn’t have much food; they only had rice and beans so that is why they caught, killed and ate the rats. They might not have been familiar with the diseases that the rats could have been carrying such as Wails Disease.
In the past the celebrities had eaten parts of other creatures that were still alive which is a big part of the programme. The celebrities have to take an active part in jungle life. According to the RSPCA, in New South Wales, it’s animal cruelty to have killed and eaten rats. The celebrities involved will both appear in court in February 2010.

… that World Westling Entertainment puts smiles on people’s faces. Every year WWE invites soldiers to watch the action. Sometimes they let the troops have autographs and photos backstage. I'm a big fan of WWE and I like that they help other people. Did you know that WWE helped raise money for Haiti too? [Sampson]
